Keywords:
carrying capacity assessment, architectural heritageAbstract
This article presents a comparative analysis of methodologies for assessing
tourism carrying capacity at architectural heritage sites. A systematic literature review of 29
scientific sources published between 1964 and 2025 identified six principal methodological
approaches: Cifuentesʼ three-level model (PCC–RCC–ECC), Shelby–Heberleinʼs social carrying
capacity framework (C-CAP), Limits of Acceptable Change (LAC), Coccossisʼ composite
indicator system, HBIM-sensor-based digital monitoring, and GIS-agent-based modeling. The
study systematizes formulas, correction factors, and application domains of each methodology.
Findings indicate that no single model fully addresses the specificities of heritage buildings,
including CO₂ concentration dynamics in enclosed spaces, structural load tolerance, and cultural
value preservation. An integrated approach combining quantitative frameworks with digital
monitoring technologies is recommended.
